= Work, Power, and Knowledge:
113 Professions at the Heart of Fourteenth-Century Mamluk Society
In the fourteenth century, a judge from Mamluk Syro-Egyptian society undertook to describe the professions and functions that structured his time. Through 113 recorded occupations, he reveals the administrative, religious, economic, and social framework of a world often referenced, yet rarely examined from within.

This volume offers the first complete translation into French — and into a Western language — of this important text. It represents a major contribution to the social history of the Mamluk world and provides a valuable tool for understanding the concrete mechanisms of power, knowledge, and labor in the fourteenth century. The translation is accompanied by a detailed glossary explaining each profession mentioned, as well as a study devoted to the life and career of the author, placing his testimony within its intellectual and institutional context.
