The approach presented in this book is primarily archaeological and relies exclusively on the direct and personal observation of the traces of the stone cutting techniques on different types of natural stone masonries. The study of the stone cutting techniques is used in the first place as a method to follow the progression of a medieval building site and to establish the relative chronology of the different parts of it, although in certain cases more absolute dating may also be possible.
