The Goddess Alanzuwa. Continuity from the Hittite Empire or Local Changes in the First Millennium?

= Paper =

by Manfred HUTTER, in Res Antiquae 23, 2026.

The goddess Alanzuwa is mentioned in only a limited number of Hieroglyphic Luwian texts from the Iron Age. None of the references to the goddess can be directly linked to her role in Hittite texts from the 2nd millennium (e.g. in the pudaḫa festival or the ḫišuwa festival). This is because the worship of the goddess in the 1st millennium reflects various local traditions. Alanzuwa is of particular significance as the goddess of the city of Harmana, for which Yariri built a large temple in Karkamiš in the 8th century.
