Egyptian Toponyms in Akkadian. A Synthesis and Critical Evaluation of the Evidence

= Paper =

by Mattias KARLSSON, in Res Antiquae 23, 2026.

This article synthesizes and critically evaluates all proposed Egyptian toponyms attested in Akkadian texts, from the Amarna letters to Neo-Assyrian royal inscriptions. It compiles a comprehensive list, distinguishes securely identified from disputed cases, and reassesses interpretations using textual context alongside phonology. The study shows that several names traditionally viewed as Egyptian are better explained as non-Egyptian or historiographical adaptations. Secure identifications cluster around politically significant centers, especially in the Delta. Rather than neutral geography, Akkadian renderings reflect military and diplomatic interaction. Egyptian toponyms in Akkadian should therefore be understood as historically conditioned evidence of intercultural contact..
