It is shown that the Indo-European word for ‘wine’ *wiH1n- is borrowed from a root attested in North-Eastern Caucasic that means ‘red’. In fact most words in Greek, Anatolian languages or Semitic are derived from North-Eastern Caucasic roots, hence bearing testimony to the ultimate origin of wine and vine-growing. Some items have even reached Egypt.
